The Canada Southern Railway
Past & Present

82 Minutes  Narration

The Canada Southern was once a busy double track mainline route, leased by the likes of the New York Central, seeking a faster way between New York and Chicago. For many decades passengers and freight were rushed across its well maintained rails.

In this exciting video, you'll visit the remaining active sections of this once mighty railroad. Enjoy the extensive footage of NS and CN action in more recent times, along with visits to the former Montrose yard and Fort Erie. We will also bring you to St.Thomas, once the bustling hub of the mighty Canada Southern. You will also enjoy coverage of Tibury's "wigwag" signals, which still activate with each passing train.

Included is archival 1970's era film footage of earlier times on the CASO, along with "then and now" scenes at various locations. We have also included coverage of CN#513, both in 1987 and nearly 20 years later as one of the last revenue trains to ever run west out of St.Thomas.

Join us in this close-up look at action along the CASO, past and present!

Your Satisfaction is Guaranteed.

The CASO has had many tenants over the years, in this 1970’s scene Penn Central train BM-7 hits the Essex curve at high speed.

The hub of the Canada Southern was once St.Thomas, Ontario. The NYC and its successors all maintained extensive shop operations here. Today the property is silent.

There are not many "Wig wag" style crossing signals still in use today, but along the CASO just east of Tilbury, railfans can view them protecting the right-of-way.

We chased one of the very last revenue trains to use the Canada Southern out of St. Thomas in October of 2005. In this screen capture, 2 CN GP 9s pass through Rodney, Ontario.

Winter finally arrived in 2007, as we caught CN 434 rounding the curve at Essex.

Norfolk Southern no longer exercises trackage rights along the Canada Southern. In this shot, NS 343 turns west towards Windsor at Essex.
